The USS South Dakota BB-57
  •  The South Dakota was launched in June 1941 and entered service in March 1942. In November 1942, she formed a TF64 formation with the battleship Washington and some destroyers, and exchanged fire with one Japanese battleship, two heavy cruisers and several destroyers in the southwest of the Guadalcanal Islands. The South Dakota was shot 42 times, causing significant damage. After that, she used Scarpa Bay as a base to perform missions with the British mainland fleet. During the occupation of the Philippines, she followed the air carrier formation to cover the landing forces for landing. On July 14, 1945, as a member of the bombardment formation, she participated in the bombardment of the Kamaishi Steel Works on Honshu Island. This was the first bombardment of the Japanese mainland by a heavy warship. She retired on January 31, 1947. Based on her performance in World War II, the South Dakota won a total of 13 battle star medals.
